Abstract

A chapter in Multiphase Flows for Process Industries: Fundamentals and Applications (Wiley-VCH, 2022). The chapter covers flows with phase change commonly encountered in reactors and separation processes used in chemical industries. Process applications are classified into three categories: deriving energy from primary resources (combustion, gasification, pyrolysis); harnessing energy for applications (boiling, condensation, drying, melting); and specialised processes (cavitation, crystallization, solidification). Fundamental phenomena, modelling approaches, and industrial examples are presented for each category, with emphasis on applications relevant to chemical and process engineering.
